How You Choose Where You Live and the Bigger Effect It Has on Your Life

Last year I was invited to write for an international expat publication. I went through some of their articles from different parts of the world. Doing that brought up one of the questions personal inventory questions I go through when I work with private clients.

How did you choose where you live?

The real answer is not the one that you have ready on the tip of your tongue. It’s not because that’s where you were born, or your whole family is there, or your spouse can’t get the same kind of job somewhere else. You choose it every day. Because the minute you don’t choose it, you will live somewhere else.

There are much deeper reasons why you do or don’t do things. How you choose where you live and how you live there is one of them.

In my life, I’ve learned to never say never. Every time I do it seems that not too long afterward that’s exactly what happens.

It’s important to keep asking why and going beyond the surface answer you give yourself to find the real truth.

I move around a lot, have all my life.

I lived in Cabo for most of the 90’s. Then there was the breast cancer and long story short I was in the US for 11 years. I created my own business, became an author, speaker, event promoter, mentor to info-marketers, etc.

In 2010 I was speaking on a cruise teaching my sales system, “Getting to YES Without Selling” to a network marketing company. As the ship pulled into Cabo I was asked if I would ever come back here. I said it looked so crowded that I wouldn’t even want to come back for a vacation, much less live here again!

In less than a month my ex-husband, who had no intention of leaving the states, out of the blue decided to move back here. Less than a year later I followed. That’s the never say never part.

What are the why’s?

There are a lot of why’s or what’s that can be answered to get an understanding of how you make decisions, what your belief system is, what you value in your life and why. Because sometimes the things we think we value are actually safety blankets to keep us in our comfort zone, and not really want we value.

For my example, there are why’s around why did I move?

  • Why Cabo again?
  • Why the place I chose in Cabo?
  • What were the most important factors in choosing the particular location I would live?
  • Why did I choose one condo over another, and why a condo instead of a house?

You probably don’t ask yourself these kinds of questions, but there is gold in there to empower you in designing your ageless life and business.
